Gambling should be entertainment you can afford. When it stops being that, help is available and it is free and confidential.
New York support. The NYS Problem Gambling HOPEline is 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369), or text HOPENY to 467369. It operates around the clock. The New York Council on Problem Gambling runs regional Problem Gambling Resource Centers across the state offering free, confidential support in person.
National support. The National Problem Gambling Helpline is 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537), available 24/7 with call, text and chat. Gamblers Anonymous holds meetings across New York State and online.
Warning signs worth taking seriously. Betting more than you planned. Chasing losses with bigger stakes. Borrowing, selling possessions or using money meant for bills. Hiding how much you play from people close to you. Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut down. Gambling to escape stress or low mood. Missing work, study or family commitments. If several of these are familiar, it is worth talking to someone.
Practical tools. Set a deposit limit before you play, not during a session. Set a session time limit. Use cooling-off and self-exclusion tools where an operator offers them. Blocking software such as Gamban and GamBlock restricts access to gambling sites across all your devices and works regardless of where an operator is licensed — which matters here, because offshore operators are not bound by any New York self-exclusion scheme.
An honest note about offshore sites. Responsible gambling tools at unregulated operators are voluntary and vary in quality. Some offer proper limits and self-exclusion; others offer very little. A state-licensed operator is obliged to provide them. This is one of the genuine protections you give up by playing offshore, and device-level blocking software is the more reliable safeguard.
For family and friends. If someone close to you is struggling, Gam-Anon supports families, and the HOPEline advises relatives as well as players. You do not need the person's permission to seek advice for yourself.
